Weekly CPU & Video Card Price Guide: January 2002 1st Edition

Introduction
After a holiday break, the AnandTech Weekly Price Guides are back for the New Year. While the New Year is bound to bring changes to all of the sectors we track, the Guide's goal remains: to give you the best deals on the hardware you want to buy. As usual the Guide is broken into two parts: CPU & Video Cards and Memory & Motherboards. This week we have our Weekly CPU & Video Card Price Guide since the return.
We select vendors to appear in our Price Guides based on two requirements: solid consumer feedback and having the lowest possible pricing. You'll notice that these vendors aren't paying us to be listed here; we do not accept requests to be listed here. We have tried to eliminate vendors with low feedback rating, but we do encourage you to do your own research before purchasing from any of these vendors.
With the new and improved Price Guides we have not only increased our standards when evaluating online vendors, but we have also partnered up with our friends at CNet to offer yet another service to you all. Using CNet's Shopper.com search engine we can provide you with an additional pool of vendors to search from that are checked up on by CNet. You can wade through those results by clicking on the CNet Pricing link in the second to last column on the right.
If there are any problems with the guide or a vendor's pricing changes dramatically then be sure to email the author listed at the top of the page and we'll take appropriate action. Remember that although some vendors may be cheaper, we only list those with generally positive feedback from a decent number of consumers. As usual, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions feel free to email us or post in the AnandTech Forums.
Also be sure to check out AnandTech's Hot Deals Forum for even more great CPU, video card and other technology buys.
Disclaimer
AnandTech does not endorse any vendor listed in the following price guide. AnandTech does not sell positions on the Price Guide. AnandTech nor any of the vendors listed in this guide guarantee the prices presented in the following pages.
This Week
As usual, if you have any reports of incorrect prices please feel free to email us with the name of the vendor and the product/price that appears incorrectly on their website. This will help us produce a more useful guide in the future.
A lot as happened since our last CPU & Video Card Price Guide, primarily the release of the first 0.13-micron Pentium 4 processors as well as the Athlon XP 2000+. You can read all about those CPUs in our head-to-head comparison published earlier this month. On the video side of things, the GeForce3 Ti 200 continues to sell very well while the Ti 500 is increasingly more difficult to obtain. The same can be said about the ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 8500DV which we will be finally reviewing later this week.

AMD's pricing on their Athlon XPs is finally at much more reasonable levels for AMD; unfortunately that means that you can no longer have the fastest AMD processor for under $140. In fact, the Athlon XP 2000+ carries quite a heavy premium over the 1900+. At $319, the 66MHz boost in clock speed the 2000+ provides does not make up for the $112 boost in price over the 1900+.
The Athlon XP 1700+ has taken the recommendation away from the 1600+ as the XP that offers the most bang for your buck at $119.

Intel's latest CPU releases have driven Pentium 4 pricing to much more competitive levels, although the most desirable Pentium 4s are still a bit more expensive than their Athlon XP counterparts.

Although the retail price on the card is closer to $400 we see that the All-in-Wonder Radeon 8500DV can be had for $311. If you can't wait another few weeks for the next few graphics releases, the current recommended buys are either the ATI Radeon 8500 or the GeForce3 Ti 200.
