Anandtech is one of my favorite tech sites because of two reasons: it has extremely technical and thorough analysis/reviews of products/tech, and all the content is available primarily as text.

More content is always a good thing, but on news sites, I never watch videos. If you have video content alongside your usual text content, that's awesome. If you have video-only content of things that make much more sense as video (unboxing a product or something), cool. However, please don't make articles you would currently have run as text into video-only. Not only would that be a non-preferential format for at least me, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who can't view video at work.

    Keep up the awesome content!

Seconded. Text is much easier to quietly consume throughout the day. I often times read a page of an article at a time and it is very simple to pick up where I left off. Sound through speakers isn't a good idea at work and headphones can be equally frowned upon. I also find that it's easier to retain information from reading it rather than watching a video.

I'm not saying video shouldn't be included, but it should be used as a supplement rather than a replacement.

I actually really enjoyed some of the video reviews. The one that sticks out in my head the most was the nexus 7 review. Topics that are greatly improved with visual aids make great videos. Smartphones, laptops, tablets and things of that sort are great in a video.

I think extremely complex things like disclosing new architectures and the like should definitely be kept to text, it's much easier to re-read text when you didn't get it the first time than to go back a few seconds in a video.

If the videos are to be made in addition to the great written articles, I'm all for it. Anandtech has some of the best tech journalism on the internet, it would be a shame to see that go away in place of videos.

I can only agree to this. I hardly ever watch video content. Mostly this site is read by me on the work location, a lot of colleagues also do this. Watching video is not really an option. I also find that the depth and width of most review videos I have seen to this date are not up to the same standard as the text based reviews.

So I really hope that video is at most used as a supplement but not as a replacement to text.

    Kind regards

I disagree. I really enjoyed watching this. It's nice to change it up a bit.

Some things can only be expressed through video, but I tend to prefer text, for a couple of reasons.

First, at work or in a public place it's acceptable to quietly read through a text article, while listening to a video generally is not.

Second, video on phones, even using what 4G we have around here, is usually slow to load and a muddy over-compressed mess.

There are other sites that present a lot of video content(Newegg, World of Tanks, other tech sites), but I simply don't bother with it.

Others like me, like video-content more than text content, depends on the person...

@Johan; Good video, keep up the good work.

Huh. I never knew you had a youtube channel. Actually, I probably did, but it didn't stick. Would it make sense to have a link to it on the main site?
  • jeffkibuule - Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - link

Video channel seems to be Anand's personal YouTube account, rather than an AnandTech branded channel.
  • tspacie - Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - link

The youtube channel is news to me too. The ORNL videos are interesting, if dry.
  • jamyryals - Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - link

The video worked great for me, and I've really enjoyed your previous videos and podcasts. A couple requests for you. Look at making your video delivery mobile friendly; easier said than done I know. Also for the audio portion, please normalize :) Keep up the good work guys.
  • J_Tarasovic - Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - link

I'll second mobile friendly. HTML5, please?

I prefer text content to the audio/video content. easier to skim and it saves a lot of time. Catching up on podcasts took me a long time because I couldn't easily skip past sections without missing something else. It really pushes my attention span when the reviewer dictates the speed or naturally speaks as they think of things. Would rather get through the content quickly.
  • MarcusMo - Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - link

Why would you want to host your own video content? If you do however, I sincerely hope that you'll be supporting standard HTML 5 video on non flash devices. Maybe there's some information about this in the video, but I couldn't watch it for obvious reasons.
  • eanazag - Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - link

Yeah, I couldn't watch it on my iPhone.

I have a preference to have text over video. I do watch the videos on occasion; like today. But generally do a lot of reading in between tasks at work.

I remember the video of the Acer Windows 8 tablet that was running an Intel Core i5 and that was a must see for the responsiveness of Windows 8.

It doesn't work for me on this iPad. Unless there is some copyright concern I don't see why you wouldn't put it on YouTube too. I think more video is great as long as there is a review to go back to for more detailed numbers and specs. I think Anand is very well spoken and does an amazing job of doing one long take and getting his thoughts across. If there was one area that could be improved in past videos from what I remember it is bringing more graphs, charts, and photos across from the text review into the video to make it more visual. There is also no harm in cutting a video into smaller sections, it is just amazing how Anand keeps his thoughts organized and does a video in one go.

Mine stopped loading after I tapped it by mistake (not realizing an ad had started) and then tapped back... I think not using YouTube might be more hassle than it's worth unless a big portion of your content is moving to video.

I can understand other's concerns regarding the convenience of text vs video, but the AT videos are some of the few embedded review videos I ever watched and their podcast's the only one I've ever been able to sit thru. I think Anand does a great job of making either more compelling and info dense than most others of their kind.

Still, I agree video should remain complimentary to the main articles, and/or used for articles you wouldn't otherwise put up in text form (tho I imagine video requires far more prep and polish).
  • SodaAnt - Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - link

PLEASE make them open in a pop up window, please. If I really want to click on an ad I shouldn't be forced to go back to the video then watch the ad again!
  • boostern - Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - link

Anand please don't drop the text part of an article, text si for people who trust in you and visit the site very frequently, video is for occasional visitors...and with only videos anandtech will lose the professional part of the site.

Hey Johan, is that 5kS/s 24-bit power analyzer an open source university project?
  • JohanAnandtech - Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - link

We'll test it first before we decide how to go further... If you have ideas on how to move forward let me know (johan@anandtech.com)

I Have always enjoyed reading the articles on this site. They are well thought out and provide technical information that you cannot find in other reviews. I absolutely love the video reviews and im looking forward to even more of them.

    thanks again

It's nice to put a face to the name.

I'm actually still running more LS-DYNA and HPC tests right now on a 3930K that's been OC'd to 4.5 GHz.

My plan is to ultimately start to incrementally OC it by an additional 100 MHz to 5 GHz, and to finish testing at that speed.

So far, it's doing the LS-DYNA runs using about 325 W. I've got 64 GB of DDR3-1600 and also I've got a EVGA GTX 660 that's probably also pulling a bit of power (although I'm not taxing that nearly as much yet).

I would (naturally) of course like to see more HPC benchmarks, but as you've probably already experienced, the HPC tests take quite a lot of time to run.
  • alpha754293 - Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - link

I'm curently in the middle of a 31-hour run right now.
  • Braumin - Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - link

That was a great video. I agree with others that I prefer text articles as well due to not always being able to listen to a video, but it's nice to have the option.

Very nice test setup I use some of that same equipment every day. SSDs sure have changed the storage game - amazing what you can do with a single enclosure and a SAS cable where as you used to need multiple FC HBAs and a SAN to get that kind of performance.
  • Rocket321 - Wednesday, December 19, 2012 - link

Won't play on android so I won't be able to watch it any time soon. I hope you add mobile video support before the roll out.

I'm amazed I didn't wake the neighbors! Damn! If you're going to have ads in front, you need to have them properly normalized (to a similar average SPL as the content).
